It is estimated that up to eighty percent of analogue domestic electricity meters are more than fifteen years old, which often means errors in the readings.
Old electricity meters require regular inspection checks to ensure they are measuring the wattage used with accurate precision.
There is a move to replace all meters in Spain with new style digital meters which will allow time differentiation and remote management but for many, this will not be completed before 31st December 2018.
In the meantime, there are a couple of ways to protect yourself from these errors. You can opt to purchase a digital meter at around €96 or, you can switch to the dual tariff and for approximately €30 you can have a new digital meter on a rental basis.
